Responsibilities:

• Assist residents and home health clients with activities of daily living (ADLs) including bathing, dressing, grooming, and oral hygiene
• Monitor and accurately document vital signs, weight, intake and output, and any changes in patient condition, reporting concerns promptly to the supervising nurse
• Provide safe and compassionate repositioning, transfers, and ambulation assistance using proper body mechanics and assistive devices
• Support residents and clients with meals and snacks, including feeding assistance as needed, while encouraging adequate nutrition and hydration
• Maintain a clean, safe, and comfortable environment for all residents or home health clients in accordance with care plan and facility/agency protocols
• Assist nursing staff with wound care preparation, specimen collection, and non-invasive clinical procedures as permitted under GNA scope of practice in Virginia
• Engage residents and clients in conversation, recreational activities, and emotional support to promote mental well-being and reduce isolation
• Accurately complete and maintain resident/client care documentation in compliance with HIPAA, state regulations, and facility or agency policies
• Communicate effectively with interdisciplinary care teams, family members, and supervisors to ensure continuity and quality of patient-centered care
• Adhere to all infection control protocols, safety standards, and emergency procedures specific to long-term care and home health environments

Qualifications & Requirements for GNA Candidates in Arlington, VA

• Current, valid Geriatric Nursing Assistant (GNA) certification recognized by the Virginia Board of Nursing or Maryland Board of Nursing (reciprocity considered)
• Active listing in the Virginia Nurse Aide Registry with no substantiated findings of abuse, neglect, or misappropriation
• Current CPR/BLS certification from an accredited provider (American Heart Association or American Red Cross preferred)
• High school diploma or GED equivalent required
• Demonstrated ability to lift, transfer, and reposition patients safely; ability to meet the physical demands of geriatric care in LTC or home health settings
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a compassionate, patient-focused approach to elder care
• Reliable transportation and the ability to commute to assigned Arlington-area facilities or client homes, including for evening and overnight shifts
• Ability to pass a comprehensive background check, drug screening, and TB test in accordance with Virginia state and facility/agency requirements
